1. Characteristics. Illnesses in mouths due to yeasts, originate from Candida. Like fungi vaginal infections, the fungus Candida can cause illnesses in mouths. The particular type of organism is called Monilia albicans and can infect both mouths and throats. When it affects the elderly and babies in particular, it is called thrush. Experts believe that Candida species cause diseases by creating dangerous toxins, attacking tissues, or creating a state of hypersensitivity. Those with lower immune systems are particularly vulnerable to a yeast infection of the mouth.
